Meet Justice Barry Anderson


Justice Barry Anderson is an experienced judge, first appointed to the Minnesota Court of Appeals in 1998, and then to the Minnesota Supreme Court in 2004. He has written over 600 judicial opinions and participated in over 2000 decisions. He also serves on the Judicial Council, the statewide governing board for the Minnesota Judicial Branch. He has taken a leadership role in implementing electronic filing of documents throughout the judiciary, an innovation designed to improve efficiency, save money and enhance access to documents for lawyers and litigants.

Justice Anderson was born and raised in Mankato and is a 1976 graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College and a 1979 graduate of the University of Minnesota Law School. He was a general practice lawyer, first in Fairmont and then in Hutchinson, where he served as the city attorney for over a decade. He is certified as a civil trial specialist by the Minnesota State Bar Association and was an experienced trial lawyer, representing both plaintiffs and defendants in a wide variety of cases.

Prior to his judicial career, Justice Anderson was a community volunteer and leader in public access television efforts, with school and church related activities and on numerous boards and committees. He has also served as a member of the Minnesota Valley YMCA Community Board of Directors, as a youth athletics coach, and as a national judge of the "We the People" high school civics competition.

He regularly engages in outreach on behalf of the Supreme Court, participates in continuing legal education efforts locally and nationally for both lawyers and judges and speaks to many groups of students and adults, in St. Paul and across Minnesota, about the role of our courts in our state and the importance of the rule of law.

He and his wife, Louise have three adult children.
